The National Institute of Design (NID) in India is the place to be, for an aspiring designer with dreams of making a mark in the world of design.
The entrance test for getting admission to NID B.Des has 2 stages. The NID Studio Test is the second stage of the NID entrance exam, following the NID Design Aptitude Test (DAT) which is the first/prelims phase.
The studio test is a hands-on test is designed to assess your practical design skills, model making, understanding of scale, working models, spatial awareness, creativity, problem-solving abilities, and overall understanding of design concepts. The test usually consists of 3-4 tasks that vary in nature. It can include tasks on understanding scale, proportion, spatial awareness, creativity, problem-solving, blind test for material identification, observation skills, audio-visual rounds, 3D-Model making, clay modelling, doodling, wire molding, inter personal skills etc.
10 Tips to Crack the NID Studio Test:
- Strengthen your foundation:
Before attempting the Studio Test, it’s essential to have a strong foundation in design principles, colour theory, and basic sketching. Start with the basics and gradually build your skills.
- Master time management:
The NID Studio Test is time-bound, typically 3 hours long. Always have your timer ticking when you work on an exercise. Practice working under pressure and time constraints.
- Sharpen your observation skills:
Observation is the key to solving design problems. Pay attention to your surroundings, and analyse everyday objects/problems and situations to find inspirations for your designs.
- Develop a problem-solving mindset:
The NID Studio Test often includes problem-solving exercises. So identify day to day problems, think of how to solve it in a creative way, look for innovative solutions.
- Get familiar with materials:
Since material manipulation and model making are important aspects of the Studio Test, get hands on with different materials such as clay, thermocol, cardboard, wires, paper, fabrics etc. Experimenting with them beforehand to learn their properties, potential uses, learning various techniques on how to join them – helps you to come up with out of the box ideas during the test.
